Dogstooth Design + Communication created a set of illustrations to be used for signage at The King’s Observatory, a Grade I listed building located within Old Deer Park in Richmond, Surrey.
The Old Deer Park was designed for King George III by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, fondly remembered as ‘England’s greatest gardener’ and arguably England’s greatest landscape architect.
Sir William Chambers was chosen to design and construct an observatory for the King in 1769. It stood within the park to observe the heavens, and in particular to view the passage of Venus across the face of the Sun – a rare astronomical phenomena that occurred early in the morning of 3 June that year.
The King’s Observatory stands today as part of England’s heritage. The beauty of the building and its surroundings are shared with the local residents when it opens its doors to the public annually.
